Gastritis is the inflammation of the stomach lining. It can be acute (sudden) or chronic (long-term). Symptoms include pain or a burning sensation in the stomach area, nausea, vomiting, bloating, and loss of appetite.
Causes of gastritis may include:
- Chronic use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen)
- Infection with Helicobacter pylori
- Alcohol consumption
- Stress
- Autoimmune diseases
- Smoking
- Caffeine
Treatment includes antacids or medications that reduce acid production in the stomach. Avoiding alcohol, quitting smoking, and proper diet also play an important role. In some cases, treatment may be needed to eradicate Helicobacter pylori.
