It is a functional condition, meaning it is not caused by organic damage or inflammation but by a dysfunction in the motility of the intestine and the interaction between the intestine and the brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The symptoms of IBS can vary from person to person, but the most common include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 <strong>Abdominal pain and cramping<\/strong>, usually relieved after bowel movements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 <strong>Diarrhea, constipation, or alternating<\/strong> between the two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 <strong>Bloating and a feeling of fullness.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2022 Nausea.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2022 Flatulence (belching or passing gas).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many IBS patients also report lower back pain, which is often associated with abdominal pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Causes and Risk Factors:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exact causes of IBS are not fully understood, but potential contributing factors include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2022 Disruptions in the interaction between the brain and the gut.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2022 Stress and psychological factors.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2022 Previous gastrointestinal infections.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2022 Imbalance in the gut microbiota.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Sleep Disorders:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many IBS patients report sleep disturbances, such as insomnia or frequent sleep interruptions. These disruptions can worsen the symptoms of IBS, creating a vicious cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Diagnosis:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The diagnosis of IBS is based on the <strong>Rome IV criteria.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Rome IV criteria, the diagnosis of IBS is based on the presence of the following symptoms:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. The symptoms should have started at least <strong>six months before the diagnosis.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Subtypes of Irritable Bowel Syndrome according to Rome IV Criteria:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on bowel habits, IBS can be classified into four subtypes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2022 IBS with predominant diarrhea (IBS-D):<\/strong> When diarrhea predominates in bowel movements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2022 IBS with predominant constipation (IBS-C):<\/strong> When constipation predominates in bowel movements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2022 Mixed IBS (IBS-M):<\/strong> When there is alternation between diarrhea and constipation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2022 Unclassified IBS (IBS-U):<\/strong> When symptoms do not fit into any of the above categories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Treatment and Management:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The management of IBS is individualized and may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 <strong>Dietary changes<\/strong>, such as a low FODMAP diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 <strong>Medications <\/strong>to regulate diarrhea, constipation, or pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 <strong>Stress management<\/strong> and therapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conclusion:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a complex but manageable condition.
