Definition:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A peptic ulcer<\/strong> is a lesion in the mucosa (internal lining) of the stomach or the first part of the small intestine (duodenum).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are two main types of peptic ulcers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Gastric Ulcer:<\/strong> Located in the stomach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Duodenal Ulcer:<\/strong> Located in the duodenum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Causes:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori):<\/strong> A bacterial infection that is the most common cause of peptic ulcers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs):<\/strong> Medications like ibuprofen and aspirin can irritate the mucosa of the stomach or duodenum, leading to ulcers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Other causes:<\/strong> Rarely, conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, which causes excessive gastric acid production, can lead to ulcers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, stress, and the intake of spicy foods can worsen the symptoms, though they are not primary causes of ulcers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Symptoms:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Colicky pain, primarily in the epigastric region<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Bloating and feeling of fullness<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Heartburn and indigestion<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Nausea or vomiting<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Weight loss<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Black or bloody stools (indicating bleeding)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diagnosis:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Gastroscopy:<\/strong> Direct examination of the stomach and duodenum lining to identify and exclude ulcers. Biopsies can be taken to rule out an H. pylori infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Blood, stool, or breath tests:<\/strong> Used to detect H. pylori.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Treatment:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Antibiotic therapy:<\/strong> For a 10-day period to eradicate H. pylori.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs):<\/strong> To reduce acid production in the stomach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Avoidance of NSAIDs:<\/strong> If they are the cause of the ulcer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Dietary changes: <\/strong>Avoid smoking, alcohol, caffeine, and spicy foods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
